Bregenz Festival celebrated its 50. anniversary. The Bregenz Festival dramaturgy team continued its policy of producing a popular work on the Seebühne and an unknown work in the Festspielhaus: They staged Beethoven's Fidelio on the Lake (conducted by Ulf Schirmer, directed by David Pountney, stage design by Stefanos Lazaridis) and Rimski-Korsakov's The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitzeh (conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, directed by Harry Kupfer, stage design by Hans Schavernoch) inside.
In its jubilee years, Bregenz Festival attracted a record number of visitors. Again, additional stands and extra performances could not satisfy the public's demand. With 318,000 visitors, Fidelio became the most visited production on the Seebühne.
