The Kornmarkttheater opened. Its name is reminiscent of the fact that the first theatre in Bregenz originally was a granary. With about 700 seats, the small theatre still provided enough space for operas and ballets to be performed. The Vorarlberger Landestheater called it its home for spoken theatre. Furthermore, it also hosted guest performances of the Wiener Burgtheater, the Volkstheater, the Theater in der Josefstadt and many German theatres that visited the city as part of Bregenz Festival's programme. As for musical theatres, Italian light and bel canto operas were presented up until the 70s.
