As if in a frenzy, Robert Schumann composed his Cello Concerto in A minor within two weeks in 1850, shortly after moving to Dusseldorf. However, the composition, which is known for its many character changes, was not well received in the beginning. It is believed that it had never been performed publicly while the composer was still alive. The world-class cellist Kian Soltani, who is well known at the Bregenzer Festspiele, the Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė and the Wiener Symphoniker want to convince the audience of the contrary. Furthermore, festival guests can look forward to Gustav Mahler’s 1st symphony lined with traditional dances and natural sounds. But this idyll too is spoiled more than once.
