The Japanese geisha Cio-Cio-San, called Butterfly, revels in happiness when the US-American lieutenant Pinkerton marries her. Their love culminates in an enchanting duet. Soon after, however, a ship takes the soldier back home.

It is a clash of worlds and values: While Pinkerton feels free and marries an US-American woman back home, Butterfly, full of love, hope and longing, waits for his return for three long years – together with their child. Singing her famous aria “Un bel dì vedremo”, she imagines the day she and her beloved husband will be reunited. Then, however, Pinkerton returns with his US-American wife and Cio-Cio-San makes an irrevocable decision.

As one of the most played operas today, Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly returns to the Seebühne for another summer. With a fine Japanese-looking piece of paper, stage designer Michael Levine created a magical platform on Lake Constance for Cio-Cio-San’s touching story. Andreas Homoki, artistic director at the Zurich Opera House, uses atmospheric video projections and Antony McDonald’s colourful costumes to stage this heartbreaking opera in the beautiful lakeside scenery. Conductor Enrique Mazzola returns as musical director.

    Cancellation and exchange policy

Bregenz Festival policy is to proceed with open-air performances even if the weather looks inclement. Please note, that performances will go ahead outside even if it rains lightly. Therefore, we recommend visitors to bring waterproof clothing, but not umbrellas, because they obscure the view. There is no intermission during the performance on the Seebühne.

Tickets in category 1, 1plus, 2 and festival lounge and premium tickets saying "gültig für See + Festspielhaus / keine Rückerstattung" are valid for the semi-staged version in the Festspielhaus | Großer Saal if the performance on the Seebühne is cancelled or plays for less than 90 minutes. The tickets are non-refundable. If a performance is cancelled and move to the Festspielhaus | Großer Saal, Category 1 seats are located in the stalls, Category 2 seats in the circle. Seats that are next to each other on the Seebühne may not be next to each other in the Festspielhaus | Großer Saal because of the different seating plans.

Tickets in categories 3 to 7 saying "gültig nur für die Seebühne" are valid only for the Seebühne. If the performance is cancelled or plays for less than 60 minutes, ticket holders may request a refund of the tickets or alternatively exchange the tickets for a later date (subject to availability).
