Masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire can be heard in the orchestral concerts.
Familiar and popular works – two Beethoven symphonies, Dvořák’s best known symphony and two important pieces by Richard Strauss – are on the programme alongside a complete novelty: the huge Symphony for Baritone and Orchestra by Tyrolean composer Thomas Larcher, who is working on an opera that has been commissioned by Bregenz Festival. Another work being performed here for the first time is Martinů’s virtuoso Double Concerto. In that concert, featuring music solely by Czech composers, the Prague Philharmonic Choir – a regular guest at Bregenz Festival since 2011 – will be celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of their country’s independence with Dvořák’s Te Deum. With Carmen on the lake stage, music by one of Bizet’s compatriots will be played as well: Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and La valse, his farewell and homage to the waltz – which we hear in full glory in Strauss’s Rosenkavalier Suite.
