Musik & Poesie

Professional fools from literature and music, world famous arias not sung but whistled, mighty emotions in intimate songs – the events of Musik & Poesie offer an unusual perspective on the operas to be staged at this summer's festival.

After his rapturously received performance as a whistling artiste in summer 2016, Nikolaus Habjan returns to Lake Constance with a new programme. His new repertoire features arias from Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, including of course "La donna è mobile". Habjan's show also links to the acclaimed theatre production Böhm from last summer's festival in that Paulus Hochgatterer, author of the libretto for Böhm, has written a short scene to be played by Habjan's puppet figure of a jester.

Peter I. Tchaikovsky is world famous as the composer of Eugene Onegin and other operas, ballet scores and symphonies, but his many songs are little known. A young singer from the Bregenz Festival Opera Studio, who will also be performing in Eugene Onegin, will give a recital of some of his songs. Tchaikovsky's opera was based on Alexander Pushkin's glorious poetry, some of which will be heard here in German translation.

Jesters made a living from their pranks and jokes, which also secured them certain privileges. They were feared, but not free of danger. The writer and great story teller Michael Köhlmeier introduces us to a selection of professional fools from history, interspersed by the young Cölner Barockorchester ensemble playing another musical version of Don Quixote: Georg Philipp Telemann's Overture Suite.
