The orchestra of the Bregenz Festival
Vienna Symphony Orchestra

Since the Festival was founded in 1946, over 70 years ago now, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra has spent every summer as orchestra in residence at Bregenz Festival. The musicians live and work for a good one and a half months in their second home on Lake Constance. As well as appearing as the opera orchestra in performances on the lake stage and at the Festspielhaus, the VSO traditionally gives three orchestral concerts with leading conductors and classical soloists. In addition to that, during their enthusiastic Vorarlberg residency the VSO musicians form various ensembles as part of the Festival's fringe programme and on Vienna Symphony Day and perform all round Vorarlberg, strengthening the already close ties with the federal state. For the remainder of the year the orchestra gives concert series at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Musikverein and is responsible for the greater part of the concerts in the music-filled capital; it also performs at major music venues around the world as a cultural ambassador of Vienna. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900. It rapidly established a glowing international reputation under such eminent conductors as Bruno Walter, Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwängler and for giving the world premiere of important works by Anton Bruckner, Arnold Schoenberg and Maurice Ravel among others. The VSO developed into a world-class orchestra thanks to the chief conductors Herbert von Karajan, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Carlo Maria Giulini and Georges Prêtre, who all influenced and further honed the orchestral sound. The further development and preservation of the orchestra's specifically Viennese playing tradition has lain, since the 2014|15 season, in the capable hands of chief conductor Philippe Jordan, who conducts his orchestra in at least one concert in Bregenz every summer, as is traditional.
