The situation

When Hebrew and Arabic speakers talk about the political situation in the Middle East, they refer to it simply as "the situation". In recent years many people from that very background have arrived in Berlin. In the past they led separate lives because of the conflict. Now they keep running into each other in the German capital.

Resident director at Berlin's Maxim Gorki Theater, Yael Ronen, sets her story in a German language course in the Neukölln district. The course participants have all come to Berlin in recent years. From Syria, where war has raged since 2011. From Israel and Palestine, where the political and social climate has been growing ever more militant. No wonder, then, that in German teacher Stefan's class German grammar poses the least problem of all. Yael Ronen and actors who have come to Berlin from Syria, Palestine and Israel explore the paradoxes of re-encountering "neighbours" as well as ghosts from their past.

The Situation was presented at Berlin's Theatertreffen showcase in 2016 and voted Play of the Year by critics of "Theater heute".
