The marriage of figaro

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Opera buffa in four acts
Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte
Sung in Italian with German subtitles

14 August 2017 – 7.30 pm, Vorarlberger Landestheater
3½ hours (incl. interval)
Die Hochzeit des Figaro

Figaro's bride-to-be Susanna is supposed to spend the first night, not with him, but with the count he works for? Figaro uses all his cunning, and exploits the confused emotional state of the people around him, to prevent the count from exercising his peculiar aristocratic privilege. The disappointed countess, the pubescent Cherubino, and Marcellina who dotes on Figaro all get swept along on the maelstrom of their feelings. Overt demonstrations, covert intimations, true and false identities leave their marks. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera – the only one based on a contemporary work – contains comic scheming, erotic recklessness and political dynamite. What the censors objected to in Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais' comedy elegantly found its way into Lorenzo da Ponte's libretto and Mozart's score.

After Così fan tutte in 2015 and Don Giovanni in 2016, a third Mozart–Da Ponte opera will be performed by young singers in the Bregenz Festival's Opera Studio. Staged at Vorarlberger Landestheater, the work will be directed by Jörg Lichtenstein, who thus returns to Lake Constance after his celebrated production of Così fan tutte.
