Konzert im Kunsthaus

25 Juli 2017 – 9 pm

The violin is associated more than any other instrument with Jewish musical life. The conveniently sized and portable instrument, whose historical precursor was invented in Spain in the second half of the 15th century, may have served as a musical companion to Jews on their travels around the whole world throughout the centuries. The Polish violinist Paweł Zalejski, first violin in the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra and first violin of the Apollon Musagète Quartet, is dedicating a concert at Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB) to the great tradition of Jewish violin music. He will play music by Joseph Achron, Mieczysław Weinberg and Ernest Bloch as well as a composition of his own, "Niggun", which is being performed for the first time. With this melody – which is what the Hebrew word niggun means – the musician pays homage to the Jewish community of his home town Bydgoszcz, whose centuries-long tradition was terminated in 1939 by the National Socialists.
