The Barber of Seville

Young Rosina is kept under lock and key in the house of her guardian, the miserly Doctor Bartolo. He plans to marry her to get his hands on her sizeable inheritance. An unknown man arouses Bartolo’s suspicion and Rosina’s interest. Skilfully and with the barber Figaro’s aid, Rosina manages to contact her admirer. He introduces himself as Lindoro and conceals his true identity: Count Almaviva. Once the two sweethearts have actually met thanks to Figaro’s craftiness, Bartolo sees his plans in jeopardy and immediately summons the notary. Almaviva’s identity is revealed and Rosina, indignant, agrees to marry Bartolo. But Figaro has already prepared the marriage contract with Almaviva…

Following on from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro last summer, The Barber of Seville now tells how Rosina and Figaro came to be in Almaviva’s house: she as his wife, Figaro as his valet. With its effervescent music, catchy melodies and infectious rhythms, Rossini’s comic opera took the opera world by storm after its premiere in 1816. His score will put the young singers of the Opera Studio through their paces. An unrivalled vocal coach, Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender has conducted masterclasses at Bregenz Festival for the past three seasons. This year she will also appear in the role of director for the first time at the festival, staging Rossini’s masterpiece in a production together with Italian conductor Daniele Squeo.
