Insight Session 5

A stage for To the Lighthouse
Opernatelier - Einblick 5

28 November 2016 - 7.00 p.m.

What will the stage look like for the new opera To the Lighthouse, which the Greek composer Zesses Seglias is currently writing? The opera is based on Virginia Woolf's novel, which is set on the Isle of Skye in Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century. The author tells the story of a family in which James, the youngest son of a strictly empirical father and a highly imaginative mother, is filled with hatred for his father. Woolf's style is characterised by interior monologues, a psychological narrative technique that dispenses with plot, and quotations from literature.

The process of creating a brand-new piece of music theatre which will receive its world premiere at Bregenz Festival in 2017 can be followed by the general public at so-called insight sessions in November, when set designer Jakob Kolding and costume designer Vibeke Andersen will talk about their way of working. Together with the stage director and librettist Ernst Marianne Binder they will create the visual design of the opera production.

For the Danish born artist Jakob Kolding, designing a stage set is a particular challenge but one which he has worked towards in recent years with increasingly scenically conceived installations and exhibitions.
What kind of costumes will Vibeke Andersen design for the singers? The Norwegian artist has worked in the past for the Berliner Ensemble, Oper Graz and Schauspielhaus Graz.
